I¡¯mwriting to tell you about the Chinese class next week. Let¡¯s meet at twoTuesday afternoon at the coffee shop near my school again. Dear Jim,

It¡¯sgreat to hear from you. I feel proud knowing your interest in Chinese history.

Asfor my favorite figure in Chinese history, it must be Wei Yuan, a great thinkerin the late Qing Dynasty. He, in his book, Haiguo Tuzhi (Maps and Records ofthe World), introduced modern technologies and ideas to China. That opened our eyes tothe world. In fact, he inspires me to major in Englishin college, to be a bridge between China and the world.

Interestedin knowing more? I can find you some books! Just let me know.

They look really beautiful in theshape of a diamond, about 5 inches long and 4 inches wide. In China, theseknots stand for friendship, love and good luck. People can either give them asgifts to friends or hang them in their houses. They are only 12.99 US dollarseach. If anyone wants to know more about the knots, let them write to me. Also,do let me know if you need further information. Thank you!

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15thof the eighth month of our Chinese lunar calendar. As one of thetraditional Chinese festivals, it has been enjoying great popularity in ourcountry. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy we are, we will try tocome home for the celebration. The moon that night looks the brightest in thewhole lunar month. What we love most is the time we enjoy the full moontogether. With the beautiful moon up in the sky, we sit together and eat mooncakes and fruit, sharing our stories. In addition to these traditionalactivities, we have a wider range of choices such as travelling and visitingour relatives or friends.

DearSarah,

Thankyou for your letter asking about the rebuilt Qianmen Street. Here is somethingabout it.

QianmenStreet is a famous street of over 600 years old. Along this 800-metre street, there are more than 300 shops. As the street is in the center ofBeijing, just to the south of Tian¡¯anmen Square, it¡¯s very convenient toget there by bus. You may take Buses No.17, 69 or 59. Subway Line 2 has astop there too. Qianmen Street is a pedestrian street, but there are trolleycars to take you not only to the shops, but also to theaters and teahouseswhere you can experience a truly Chinese way of life. I¡¯m sure you¡¯ll like it.

Gladto hear from you and you¡¯re welcome to China in July. The following are someChinese customs.

Firstly,we greet each other by saying ¡°Hello¡± or asking such questions as ¡°Where areyou going?¡± or ¡°Are you busy?¡± to express our care. Secondly, whenpraised, we reply with ¡°Oh, no!¡± or ¡°I¡¯m over-praised¡± to show goodmanners. Next, when receiving a gift, we usually say ¡°It¡¯s unnecessary¡± besides¡°Thanks¡± to show politeness and then put it away. Finally, at dinner parties,we talk loudly and touch glasses when drinking to someone¡¯s health or successto show that we¡¯re warm.

Anyhow, different cultures, different customs. If you ¡°Do as the Romans do when inRome¡±, you¡¯ll enjoy more of your stay here.

Hi!Tom,

Niceto read your e-mail today. I notice you¡¯ve begun to use Chinese idioms and usedmost of them correctly.

However,I¡¯m afraid there is one mistake I¡¯d like to point out. It is ¡°ÎÞËù²»Îª¡±.This idiom means ¡°do all kinds of bad things¡±. Are you dong all kinds of badthings at home? I guess what you were really trying to say is that you¡¯ve gotnothing to do these days. In that case, you should use ¡°ÎÞËùÊÂÊ¡±.We usually use ¡°ÎÞËù²»Îª¡± to express the idea that people dare todo anything bad, and ¡°ÎÞËùÊÂÊ¡± to describe the situation in whichpeople have got nothing meaningful to do. Have I made myself clear?

Anyway,I¡¯m amazed at the progress you¡¯ve made.

Hopeyou¡¯ll find a job soon.

DearPeter,

I¡¯mglad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well.

Hereare a few suggestions. First, it is important to take a Chinese course, asyou¡¯ll be able to learn from the teacher and practice with your fellowstudents. Then, it also helps to watch TV and read books, newspapers andmagazines in Chinese whenever possible.

Besides,it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs, because by doing soyou¡¯ll learn and remember Chinese words more easily. You can also make moreChinese friends. They will tell you a lot about China and help you learnChinese.

Tryand write me in Chinese next time.

Bestwishes,

LiHua

DearTony,

Chongyang, the traditional Chinese festival for the elderly, is coming around. We areplanning to visit Nursing Home to celebrate the special day, and we would liketo invite students from your school to join us.

¡

Lookingforward to your early reply.

Yours,

LiHua

OnePossible Version:

Wehave planned several activities. When we get there, we will visit the elderlyin their rooms in groups, presenting them with flowers and self-madecards to show our respect and love. Then we will do some cleaning and washingfor them with the help of the nurses.

Assome old people feel lonely, we may chat with them about their old days, changes of our city, or anything they are interested in. We may also give themsome performances: singing, dancing, and so on.

Iam sure we will both gain a better understanding of the elderly in China. Ifyou have any suggestions, please let us know.
